Over a 20-year career in the technology and securities industries, Mark Bjerknes has developed in-depth expertise in exchange trading and surveillance systems design, development and implementation. Specializing in stock market structure and regulation, high performance complex event processing, computer systems performance and capacity, and data and IT governance, Mark Bjerknes has brought this expertise to markets in the United States and overseas.

During his career, Mark Bjerknes has managed stock market automation efforts in industrialized and newly industrializing countries and served in central positions for both startup and mature technology and financial services companies. Early in Mark Bjerknes’ career, he worked in the commercial software industry, doing product development and product management for an award-winning desktop product suite, an integrated data management, statistical analysis and scientific graphics platform, where he co-developed early versions of exploratory data analysis tools like scatterplot brushing and linked data graphics and wrote interactive data viewers and macro programming interpreters. He left desktop product development to join an exchange trading systems software and consulting firm, at the time a division of a U.S. stock exchange with offices in the U.S. and Asia. After working overseas, he returned to join an exchange-based dark pool, where he worked closely with large buy-side and sell-side clients as U.S. equity product manager, and later joined one of the first ECNs approved by the SEC.

Mark Bjerknes has implemented continuous matching, semi-automated matching, and displayed and dark call auction systems for equities and fixed income products. Working with both onshore and offshore development teams, Mark Bjerknes has directed multi-organizational teams to develop and install exchange trading systems in U.S. and overseas exchanges, including some of the earliest distributed-architecture exchange trading systems deployed. He has overseen trading system development and implementation projects for floor-based and fully automated markets, in both unitary and competing marketplaces, and led full-cycle development and implementation of equities, options and fixed income market surveillance systems for automated and hybrid markets.
